Biographies

Meghanne Faulise
Meghanne is from Tok, Alaska, and this was her first year participating in ASRA. She is 16, going into the12th grade and enjoys volleyball, track, and chocolate. Her favorite parts of the trip were the incredible scenery and learning about the geology of Denali. Her input on the trip was, " This was a really great experience and I learned that there is much more than I thought related to positioning a seismometer."

Joseph Russo
Joseph lives in Fairbanks, Alaska, and he is a first time participant in ASRA. He is14, entering 9th grade, likes music, traveling, and is interested in pursuing a career based in law. His favorite parts of the trip were meeting and bonding with new people from different places and going on hikes. He said, "I enjoyed ASRA greatly and I want to stick with it. It was one of the best experiences of my life, and anyone interested in it should apply. It's completely worth it!"

Mary Strehl
Mary lives in Fairbanks, Alaska, and this is her first year in ASRA. She is 13, entering the 8th grade and she enjoys drawing, playing the violin, taek won do, ballet, and choir. Her favorite parts of the trip were the beautiful scenery and sitting around the campfire. Her favorite color is pink, and she volunteered for a kindergarten class at Joy Elementary School. "ASRA was a great program and I really learned a lot!" She said.

Jennifer Peeler
Jennifer has recently moved to the Fairbanks area from North Carolina. She is an Air Force Brat and has enjoyed living all over the United States. She is 16 and will be entering her senior year of high school this fall at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. She enjoys dancing and building robots for FIRST competitions. She is interested in pursuing a career in environmental engineering. Her favorite part of this trip was being the first person in her family to see Mt. McKinley. She also enjoyed finding the most earthquakes out of all the squiggles in the data. She enjoyed ASRA because it gave her a chance to explore the "enironmental" side of "environmental engineering" which she can't do at school all year.

Alex Valderrama
Alex came up to ASRA all the way from Houston, Texas. He is age 15 going into 10th grade and enjoys playing soccer on his schools varsity team as well as playing piano, sculpting, and participating in his school's robotics club. His favorite part of the trip was enjoying the nights around the campfire with friends and the mountainous scenery of Alaska. He thought of the trip as, "an amazing learning experience that was combined with new friendships and beautiful landscapes."
Peter Moriarty
Originally from Lexington , Massachusetts , Peter flew up to University of Alaska Fairbanks to participate in the ASRA program. Seventeen, and a rising senior in high school, Peter has many interests and hobbies, some of which include singing in the Lexington High school's Madrigal Choir as well as two a Capella groups: Zest and Mixed Nuts. He referees, coaches, and plays soccer as well as baseball. Academically, Peter's interests lie mainly in Engineering, specifically Acoustics. His most memorable experience in Denali is falling asleep by the Savage River bank listening to his favorite song, only to be startled awake by a circle of his friends standing around him, telling him it was time for dinner.
Michael West
Mike is a research assistant professor at the Geophysical Institute. He works in seismology with a research focus on volcanoes. He works with the Alaska Volcano Observatory. He particularly enjoys any activities that allow him to explore the Alaskan wilderness. The ASRA earthquakes in Denali module is a great chance to explore one of the most interesting tectonic areas of the country. The Denali field work is Mike's idea of heaven: a mix of science and outdoors, camping with bright interesting people, and campfires and s'mores each night.
Katrina Jacobs
Katrina is starting her second year as a Masters student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She is studying volcano seismology. Katrina also plays double bass and is a member of the Fairbanks Symphony. She enjoyed teaching the students about seismology, digging in permafrost, and spending time in Denali National Park.
