Site Descriptions Coordinates: 63.60943 N, 149.58406 W Date and Time: 20 July 2006 at 04:00 Greenich Mean Time Description: This site was located at an unused campsite which met both our criteria and the parks criteria. However, problems with the site include proximity to the tree roots, park road, creek, and campers. Proximity to trees also led to problems with GPS signal reception. The instrument was buried roughly forty centimeters underground. Rocks, tree roots and mosquitos prolonged the digging time to approximately two hours. Coordinates: 63.65480 N, 148.82066 W Date and Time: 22 July 2006 at 19:58 Greenich Mean Time Description: This site is located on the Denali Foundation campus behind the Charles Sheldon Center. The instrument is placed in a partially excavated outhouse, a project previously abandoned due to contact with the permafrost. The permafrost provided a stable foundation for the instrument, however it also limited the amount of time available to level the instrument before melted ice engulfed the area. A dry bag was used to protect the instrument against water infiltration, an experiment in itself. Another complication was GPS signal reception. Other than that the site was exceptionally well qualified by both our standards and the park's criteria. Coordinates: 63.7334 N, 148.9178 W Date and Time: 23 July 2006 at 00:15 Greenich Mean Time Description: This is not the originally proposed site for the instrument. The original site was engulfed in various unerground wires, gas lines, and septic tanks, as well as being located near a major roadway. (We would like to thank Ingrid Nixon for her generosity in placing her property under our shovel and criticism.) The site chosen is located in the crawlspace under the Murie Science And Learning Center. Benifits of this location include protection from changes in temperature and moisture without digging a hole. The shelter sped the installation process. Furthermore, it was the first site where we had GPS reception because the antenna was on the roof of the building. Coordinates: 63.71384 N, 149.26271 W Date and Time: 23 July 2006 at 07:15 Greenich Mean Time Description: Having surveyed the area around our Savage River campsite, it was concluded that an instrument could be situated in a corner of the campsite on the surface of the ground. The instrument was leveled on the ground. A cooler was fitted upside down on top of the instrument to provide adequate protection from the environment. It was then made air-tight with a lining of sand and gravel taken from the campsite. Benefits of aboveground installation include accessibility and ease installation. However, these compromise with the amount of noise propagating from the nearby road. |
