The eastern end of the Denali fault system originates on land in southeastern Alaska near Haines. The fault strikes northwest into the Yukon Territory and enters Alaska again just north of the Nutzotin Mountians. A corresponding zone of seismicity follows the fault system north. Immediately south of Haines, the Denali fault system is believed to connect with the Chatham Strait fault.
Two strong earthquakes have been associated with the eastern end of the Denali fault system in the past. In 1944 a magnitude 6.5 (Ms) earthquake occurred approximately 150 km northwest of Haines and in 1987 a magnitude 4.5 (Ms) earthquake occurred approximately 50 km southeast of Haines.
